3 Die While Shoveling Snow in Chillicothe
CHILLICOTHE (Ken Hines) -- The Ross County Coroner is pleading with people who may suffer from heart conditions to avoid shoveling snow after three men died while performing the act over the weekend.
The victims died within three hours of each other on Sunday morning in Chillicothe. Two of the men died while shoveling snow in their driveways, while the third victim collapsed at a gas station.
"They're men, middle-aged, and they were out probably doing more exertion than they're typically used to doing," Ross County Coroner John Gabis said.
Gabis believes heart disease might be a common factor in the men's deaths, and advises anyone who may be at risk for the ailment to ask someone younger and healthier to handle snow-shoveling duties.
"Don't take chances. Snow will melt eventually, don't let it take your life," Gabis said.
Anyone experiencing the following symptoms should seek immediate medical attention, according to Gabis:
- chest pain
- sweating out of proportion to exertion
- shortness of breath
- jaw pain
- arm pain
