Columbus City Schools Hold First Meeting about Building Closures

COLUMBUS (Amy Courtheyn) -- Emotions ran high at the first of two community input meetings for Columbus City Schools Thursday night.
 
People gathered at Fort Hayes Metropolitan High School, pleading with school officials to keep open seven schools that are set to close. They are Brookhaven High School, Independence High School, Monroe Middle School, Arlington Park Elementary School, Maybury Elementary School, Siebert Elementary School and Fifth Avenue K-6 Elementary School (relocation).

District officials have said they need to reduce spending by approximately $50 million beginning with the 2014-2015 school year.

A final meeting will be held February 25 at 6pm at East High School, 1500 E. Broad Street. People wishing to speak will need to register in-person prior to the meeting in order to be added to the speakers list. Theyll be limited to two minutes.

The Columbus City Schools Board of Education is expected to vote on the closures March 4.
