Winter Weather Causing Problems for Roofers
COLUMBUS (James Jackson) -- Snow and ice are causing problems for many of our homes. It's normally a busy time for roofers, but winter weather has their business on hold and many homeowners in a lurch.
Snow on the ground is something Al Thurn can clean up. It's what's above that he can't. "It just like rolls right off and creates a big avalanche coming down that hits the gutter," Thurn said.
Snow and ice buildup tore down part of Thurn's gutter. He saw the damage walking to work. "Oh no! Not again! But it's happened before but this was the first time it really did a lot of damage to the gutters," Thurn said.
This kind of damage usually means big business for companies like DeMarco Roofing. President Frank DeMatteo says they got 5 to 10 calls an hour just today for roof leaks and other problems. "You've got a lot of ice damming and buildup in the gutters where the snow and the ice have built up," DeMatteo said.
But, Frank says the list of work is also building up. His crew can't make repairs because of safety concerns. "Ladders slip, men fall off of roofs. A lot of black ice on roofs that you can't see. We're even limited to getting on flat roofs because of those conditions," DeMatteo said.
Al Thurn says he too has to be patient. Those same conditions will have him waiting a couple more days. "It's better for them to be safe. It's not going to go anywhere at this point," Thurn said.
Roofers are asking homeowners to help them out. They say stay off your roof. Also, don't use rakes or shovels to get the snow off and don't throw salt up there. It will ruin your shingles.
