Elderly Powell Man Dies After Falling into Frozen Pond

POWELL (Kate Liebers) -- A Powell man died after he was pulled from an icy pond in Powell, a city official reported.

Siegbert A. Allespach, 74, was pronounced dead around 5 p.m. Tuesday, less than two hours after Liberty Township firefighters rescued the man and his dog from the Meadowview Park pond, according to Powell spokesperson Megan Canavan.

Medics believe Allespach had been in the water for about 20 to 25 minutes before his rescue, Canavan stated in a release.

Allespach was apparently walking his dog in the area of South Wooten Court when the dog broke loose. The man apparently chased the dog onto the pond, where both fell into the water.

Crews responded to the 911 call around 3:46 p.m. Tuesday.

The dog was rescued and is expected to survive.
