Pete Scalia Recovers From Double Hip Replacement
COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan) -- Good Day Columbus anchor Pete Scalia made an appearance on the morning show Friday. He's been off the desk for months, recovering from double hip replacement surgery.
Co-host Carolyn Bruck was ecstatic.
"For the first time since the beginning of November, Pete is back in the Good Day Columbus studio!" she announced on air.
Pete showed off a new look: he is now sporting a full beard and an earring.
"It's been a long time," he said. "I haven't shaved since the surgery."
He had surgery back in December to replace two arthritic hips.
Pete credits Amy, his wife, with getting him through the tough months.
"There's a lot of things you take for granted when it comes to just getting around and doing common everyday things. Without her help I would not be able to do them."
There's more surgery in his future, thanks to his Rheumatoid Arthritis.
"Normally you can raise your pinky up-and-down but I actually can't raise it at all anymore because one of the arthritic bones was rubbing against the tendon and ruptured it."
Still he's been able to maintain his sense of humor. We asked him if had developed any new skills in his time off.
"Beard growing skills?" said Pete with a smile. "Yeah that might be a good one. I was thinking if the beard had a hidden talent. Maybe it has its own voice or something, saying
don't shave me."
Another talent he's honing? Diaper changing. He and Amy expect their first baby in August.
