Burned Knox Co. Baby Returns Home After Losing Leg

KNOX COUNTY (Terri Sullivan/Kate Liebers) -- A Knox County baby left the hospital Thursday after battling burns so severe, doctors were forced to amputate part of his leg.

The 6-month-old Hunter Hammons was in good spirits and in good health days after his surgery.

His grandpa, Garry Hammons, said the past month had been an emotional one.

"The last 30 days have been overwhelming. They become part of your family, he said, referring to the staff at Nationwide Childrens Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. They see your highs and lows."

The boy was alone with his mother's boyfriend when he was hurt. Mount Vernon police have been investigating the case but have not charged anyone yet.

A fund was created to support Hunter at Park National Bank in Newark as well as the First-Knox National Bank in Mount Vernon.
