WINTER BLAST: More Snow Could Impact Already Low Salt Supplies

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- As central Ohioans prepare for another winter blast, road crews hope they have enough salt on-hand to keep up with demand.

Many of the area's smaller counties have reached the end of their salt supplies amid what is already the sixth-snowiest recorded winter in the history of Columbus.

Ohio Department of Transportation officials have attempted to purchase up to 150,000 tons of salt to provide relief for counties affected by shortages, but they have been unable to find a vendor willing to part with the product.

The salt shortages could lead to major trouble in several central Ohio counties early this week, when more snow is expected to fall in the region.

ODOT officials are considering unspecified alternatives to deal with potential road issues that may come with the expected snowfall.
