OSU Students to Pay for Parking at Buckeye Village

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY (Maria Durant) -- Starting next school year, students who live in the university owned Buckeye Village Apartment Complex will have to pay for their parking spot.
Its an additional $650 a year added to their rent.

But many students who live there feel the charge is unfair and are worried about how they are going to come up with the money.

Ana Ceballon lives at Buckeye Village with her husband and 3-year-old son. She says her visa doesnt permit her to work, so the family is strapped for extra cash.

My husband is doing his doctoral studies," Ceballon said. "Well be here for five more years and for five years I cant work. Its very hard for us.

Many students who live at Buckeye Village have families and are graduate students.

CampusParc, the privately owned company that is now in charge of university parking, tried to charge the students this year.

Dave Isaacs with OSU Student Life says the university picked up the tab, but will not do that again next year. He says students now have enough time to figure out if they want to stay at the apartment complex or to move.

Isaacs says the idea behind the charge is consistency.

We dont give free parking to any other large group of students, so to be fair we need to bring them in, Isaacs said.

The new fee starts in August.
