Girl Escapes W. Columbus Home amid Fatal Shooting

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- A four-year-old girl climbed out of a window and ran to safety as a man was shot to death inside her West Side home late Tuesday night.

The girl was sleeping at an apartment at 826 Wedgewood Dr. at approximately 11:45 p.m. when an unknown gunman shot Garland Willoughby multiple times in a nearby room.

Willoughby, 28, was pronounced dead a short time later at Mount Carmel West Hospital.

The little girl woke up when the gunshots rang out, and then climbed out of a first floor bedroom before running to the home of an acquaintance at a nearby apartment complex.

Investigators do not believe the girl was related to the victim.

Police have obtained a warrant to search the Wedgewood Drive apartment as part of their investigation, which has been complicated by a lack of eyewitnesses to the murder.

Willoughby was one of two surviving victims of a 2010 triple-shooting on Sullivant Avenue, after which he drove himself to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Anyone with information about Tuesday night's murder is encouraged to contact the Columbus Division of Police at 614-645-4545.
