Body Found at Homeless Camp During Fire

COLUMBUS (Tara Morgan) -- A fire at a homeless camp turns into a death investigation.

Fire crews were called out to the camp just below 670 near Hamlet Street just after 9 P.M. Wednesday night.

A body was found burned beyond recognition inside a tent.

Witnesses heard an explosion then saw a fire.

A propane heating source is believed to have started the fire but it remains under investigation.

ABC6 got tips into the newsroom about concerns regarding safety about the camp.

Fire officials say it's not uncommon for them to go to fires like these.

"These people unfortunately have to do whatever they can to stay warm and whatever they can get a hold of there's no guarantee what they find or what they're using is going to work properly they're taking a risk at that point the alternative is freezing so," said Columbus Battalion Chief Rich Richardson.

Columbus police homicide detective were called to the scene but fire is handling the case which is believed to be accidental.
