Elevator Problems at Regency Plaza Create Hazard for Disabled Residents

COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan/Kate Liebers) -- A malfunctioning elevator in one central Ohio apartment building has become a serious problem for disabled residents.

The Regency Plaza Apartment tenants said the elevator has been out of service for two to three months.

"The problem is that not only my mother but nobody else can get out of the building, off the second floor, if they're in a wheelchair," said John, who wished to remain anonymous for his mother's protection.

"It's horrible," he continued. "My mother can't go shopping. No one else can go shopping if they're confined to a wheelchair."

He said for his mom's birthday, he hired a group of men to carry her down the steps so he could take her out for dinner.

The apartment managers agreed that the elevator has had problems, but disputed the claim that it has been out for months. They said they are waiting for a specialty part that had to be ordered out of state, and they hope to begin repair work this week.

The apartment also offered to move disabled residents to the first floor so it is easier for them to get around.
