Driver Fatally Strikes Marine in Bellefontaine, Flees Scene

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio (Ken Hines) -- Police are trying to identify a driver who fatally struck a marine who was walking in front of her husband after leaving a restaurant early Sunday morning.

Marine Drill Sergeant Monica Plank was struck by an unidentified vehicle while walking on S. Main Street at approximately 12:17 a.m. Plank had left the restaurant amid an argument with her husband -- also a Marine drill sergeant.

Plank's husband stayed behind to pay the bill before following his wife outside and attempting to convince her to stop walking, according to investigators. He was approximately 100-200 feet behind his wife when she was struck.

Plank, 34, was walking on the road in order to avoid snow and ice.

Paramedics rushed Plank to Mary Rutan Hospital immediately after the crash. She was then flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where she died at 4:02 a.m.

Plank, a California native, traveled to Logan County with her husband to visit his family. The couple was based in Quantico, Va.

Bellefontaine police hope public tips can lead to a description of the vehicle that struck Plank. Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to contact investigators at 937-599-1010.
