Lakewood Local Schools Votes Down Decision to Hire Controversial Coach Daubenmire

HEBRON, Ohio (Ben Garbarek) -- It came down to the last vote, but a controversial coach will not be getting a new job at his alma mater after a heated meeting Wednesday night.

Dave Daubenmire was being considered to take over the Lakewood High School football program. The former London High School coach is an outspoken Christian with strong views on bullying and against homosexuality, and has posted several videos on YouTube discussing his beliefs.

Daubenmire left London High School in 2000 after the ACLU filed a lawsuit claiming he was imposing his religious beliefs on his players.

Hundreds of people showed up to the board meeting for the vote. Many voiced their concerns about Daubenmire's views and his influence on the players. Others felt he could turn around a struggling program.

Ultimately the board voted 3 to 2 against hiring him.

"I know people in this community," Daubenmire said after the vote. "I grew up in this community. I know the values I have. I may be more outspoken, but I know the values I have are the values of this community, so it's sad."

Daubenmire said he would consider applying for another coaching job despite the backlash he received Wednesday night. He said he would apply if he thought he could get hired.
