Spear-Wielding Man Confronts Bucyrus Officer
BUCYRUS -- A man fought a police officer with a spear after telling 911 dispatchers he needed to be admitted to a mental institution.
When Bucyrus Police Officer Sam Caldwell arrived, he said he was confronted with an arrowhead attached to a 4-foot spear.
"What seemed benign at the door turned into a fight for his life," Bucyrus Police Chief David Koepke said.
Caldwell reportedly struggled with the man until back-up arrived. The officer's glasses were broken and he suffered a busted lip.
"They were able to subdue the man even though he was trying to get Officer Caldwell's gun," Koepke said.
The caller, Chad Randall, was charged with felonious assault. He was held in jail under a $1.5 million bond.
A woman who lives at Randall's house disputed how the altercation went down. However, she declined to be interviewed until she speaks to Randall's attorney.
Caldwell did not take time off work following the incident.
