Hundreds of AEP Customers Lose Power During Frigid Tuesday Morning

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Hundreds of central Ohioans lost power as temperatures dipped well below zero on Tuesday morning, leading AEP officials to plead for electricity conservation among their customers.

More than 500 American Electric Power customers in Frankin and Fairfield Counties were affected by outages as of 8:30 a.m. More than 1000 customers in Vinton and Athens Counties were also without power at that time.

As AEP employees worked to restore power to affected homes, company officials released an energy alert including the following tips in an effort to convince customers to conserve electricity in order to prevent more outages:

  • Set thermostat to lowest comfortable temperature
  • Open curtains on sunny side of home
  • Wait to use appliances until absolutely necessary
