Deputy Happens Upon Chase After Alleged S. Columbus Theft

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- A Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy was in the right place at the right time when he happened upon a foot chase involving a store owner and a suspected thief allegedly carrying stolen cigarettes.

The deputy was driving near Food Mart on Parsons Avenue at approximately 6 a.m. when he saw the owner of the store chasing a man through a field behind the business. The deputy joined the chase, and soon caught up with the suspect in the field, at which time he used his taser to subdue the alleged thief.

The suspect is accused of stealing two cartons of cigarettes after attempting to purchase them with another person's credit card, according to investigators. The owner of the store refused to complete the transaction, and then followed the suspect when he allegedly grabbed the cigarettes and fled the building.

After he was tasered, the suspect was found to be in possession of multiple wallets, some or all of which may have been stolen. Authorities had not filed charges against the suspect as of 8 a.m. Tuesday.
