Central Ohio Road Crews Use More Salt than Usual this Season
COLUMBUS (Andrew Michael/Kate Liebers) -- Last week's polar vortex made this Ohio December historically cold, causing crews to coat roads with thousands of tons more salt than usual.
Within the eight-county area covering most of central Ohio, crews used about 35,000 tons of salt, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The figure is 13,000 tons greater than the amount used by this time last year.
ODOT spokesperson Nancy Burton said the crews are still well stocked, with 42,000 tons available. Additional salt is ordered year-round, she said.
