Doctors Warn Ohioans of Frostbite Risk

COLUMBUS -- Doctors have said only a few minutes in the elements could cause frostbite.

The risk was important to consider Friday, as frigid temperatures blasted through the Midwest.

Health officials in central Ohio have warned people to stay outside for limited periods and to dress in layers.

"If the toes or extremities appear to be blue or pink, start doing warm water immersion -- not hot water," said Dr. Jonathan Stevens of St. Ann's Hospital.

Dr. Stevens also advised to watch out for skin turning gray or starting to blister. He said those who are losing sensation or experiencing extreme pain that does not go away need to see a doctor.
