Winter Illnesses Spread Around Central Ohio

COLUMBUS (Yolanda Harris) -- While contagious viruses are active year-round, winter is when were all most vulnerable to them.

The reason: When the weather is cold we tend to spend more time indoors. So instead of coughing and sneezing and spreading our germs around outside, were inside and spreading germs to each other.

Ive been off the anchor desk this week due to a respiratory infection. Most respiratory infections come and go within a few days, with no lasting effects. However, some cause serious health problems.

According to Dr. Roger Garcia at the Polaris Urgent Care, a respiratory infection like mine is very common and just has to run its course.

These types of infections are self-limiting diseases," Dr. Garcia said. "Symptoms will usually subside in three to five days.

He said the best ways to battle a winter bug like this is to eat right, get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, reduce your stress, take Vitamins C and D, and wash your hands frequently.
