Jailed Union Co. Father Allowed to Attend Son's Memorial

UNION COUNTY (Jen French) -- While a father sits in jail, a memorial is being planned for his son.

Natividad Hernandez, 30, was permitted to be released from jail for a few hours to attend his son's ceremony.

He was charged with leaving the scene after allegedly running over his 4-year-old, Angel Hernandez, the day after Christmas. Troopers said the child was not buckled into his seat when he fell out of the van. The van then struck Angel, who died of his injuries at the hospital.

Hernandez stayed with his injured child until medics arrived, yet officers said he failed to wait for law enforcement.

Immigration advocate Ruben Castilla Herrera has been trying to help the family. He said Hernandez, who speaks little English, wasn't told what to do and didn't leave the scene promptly.

"We're really specifically looking at his family and his needs," Herrera said. "Right now, he's a man who lost a child."

A fund has been set up to help the family send the boy's remains back to Honduras, where his mother lives.
