Authorities Arrest Suspect to End North Columbus Standoff

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Authorities apprehended a suspected drug trafficker after an hours-long standoff at a North Side apartment complex.

SWAT officers and U.S. Marshals arrested Gerardo Garcia-Gomez at approximately 12:45 p.m., several hours after authorities surrounded his apartment at 7889 Mabry Mill Ct. Garcia-Gomez was taken into custody while hiding in the attic of one of the apartments, according to investigators.

Authorities first arrived at the complex at approximately 8 a.m., and quickly evacuated the building as they began their search for Garcia-Gomez. Officers also cleared a neighboring apartment complex before finding the suspect.

Garcia-Gomez is one of 16 people charged in June in connection with an alleged large-scale heroin distribution operation that is the subject of a Drug Enforcement Agency investigation.

Agents found heroin, meth and other drugs at the apartment.

Garcia-Gomez appeared in federal court Thursday afternoon.
