Newark Cancels School Wednesday; 7th Time this Academic Year
NEWARK (Ken Hines) -- The school year may last a little longer than expected for Newark City students after district officials canceled classes on Wednesday despite a lack of available calamity days.
Newark City Schools administrators told students to stay home and avoid exposure to sub-zero temperatures on Wednesday morning -- the seventh such instance in the district during the 2013-2014 academic year.
Ohio schools are currently allowed a maximum of five calamity days per academic year. Additional canceled school days are to be made up at the end of the year, or via online course work.
Those extra measures may not be necessary, however, if state lawmakers grant Governor John Kasich's request to add grant up to four additional calamity days to Ohio schools during the current academic year.
