Man Accused of Robbing Columbus Women with Car Troubles

COLUMBUS (Lisa Rantala/Kate Liebers) -- Police have linked one suspect to a string of robberies committed just hours apart, including one involving two stranded young women.

Atosh Diriye, 27, was arrested last week after allegedly robbing two 24-year-old women last Monday.

One woman, who asked to be anonymous, said the suspect approached the car after it stalled in front of Varsity Inn off of Olentangy River Road.

She said the man began by offering help, but didn't leave even after the women insisted they could solve the problem on their own. He kept asking where the women lived, the victim said.

The man allegedly became anxious, pulled a gun and groped the women before taking their cash and shoes.

A worker at the Varsity Inn called 911. Police said they were already on the lookout for a gunman due to a string of robberies that night, including one at nearby Super 8 Motel reported 10 minutes earlier.

Police accused Diriye of robbing the motel customers and have considered him a suspect in other crimes.

A judge set Diriye's bond at $1.5 million.
