East Columbus Businesses Take Action after String of Burglaries

EAST COLUMBUS (Rob Wells/Kate Liebers) -- Businesses owners in Columbus have been fighting back against a serial burglar.

Victims said the male suspect has broken into at least 16 shops and stores in the April Lane commercial rentals since Jan. 23. They said they are worried about what might happen next.

"There's going to be a bad ending to this," said Anthony Belt, one burglary victim. "He's either going to hurt someone going into a business and bump into somebody or somebody's going to be waiting for him."

The suspect reportedly started by swiping small items like cell phones and laptops. Since then, victims have said he has worked his way up to stealing cars.

"The guy is either a locksmith or has worked as a locksmith because he's not breaking in -- he's picking the lock," Belt said.

Surveillance video has captured an image of the suspect. In one video, he spent more than 40 minutes to finally bust into one business. Before he fled, he cut the security camera wire.

Business owners said they are adding more security systems in hopes of nabbing the suspect. In the meantime, another victim has one question:

"How can you be so stupid to keep coming back to the same place?" Patrea Terry said. "I just want to smack him right on the head."
