Grove City Widow Burglarized During Husband's Funeral

GROVE CITY (Rob Wells) -- A man with a lengthy criminal record was recently accused of stealing from a grieving widow.

Scott Byers, 36, allegedly burglarized the home of a woman attending her husband's funeral. The crime occurred Jan. 7 on Stoner Drive in Grove City.

Three friends helping the widow had reportedly surprised Byers, who ran out of the home with stolen goods. He then fled in a stolen car, according to police.

Officers said they located the abandoned stolen car later that day and collected enough evidence to arrest Byers.

Grove City Police warned residents to remember to home security precautions even in stressful situations.

"Don't do anything that you wouldn't do normally when leaving your house for vacation," Sgt. Chris White said. "Make sure you're doing the same thing even though it's a difficult time. You don't want to leave anything unattended."

Byers was held Thursday night at the Franklin County Jail.
