Some Ohio Areas Struggling with Low Salt Supply

GENOA TOWNSHIP (James Jackson/Kate Liebers) -- Leaders in one central Ohio community said they're running low on salt at a time when snow is in the forecast.

Genoa Township leaders said weather-related problems temporarily prevented their salt supply from coming in.

"There was a barge accident, which held up the delivery of salt on the river -- not just Genoa Township but other communities in central Ohio," township trustee Rick Carfagna said.

To keep the 88 township streets clear, crews brought in 150 tons of salt on Friday.

Township officials said they are pre-treating the streets with a blend of brine and beat juice to preserve the salt supply.

Crews will exchange the brine for salt once the snow starts to fall, officials said.
