Doctors Warn of Frostbite during Ohio Arctic Blast

WEST COLUMBUS (Andrew Michael) -- Since the polar vortex three weeks ago, Mount Carmel Health Systems recorded about 30 frostbite-related injuries.

The ailment can develop in just minutes, which is why Mount Carmel West Medical Director Alan Gora advised people to learn the warning signs.

"You may notice that your hand is more pale," Gora said. "If you developed numbness as well that's always a concern."

The most important prevention technique is to dress in layers, he said. Those who suspect they are experiencing frostbite should slowly warm the affected area.

"Treatment is really just common sense -- getting out of the environment and slowly rewarming the extremities," Gora said.

He also advised staying dry, as damp clothing will accelerate heat loss.
Of the reported cases, most were mild and did not require admittance into a hospital, Gora said.
