Investigators Still Seek Answers in Emmitt House Fire
WAVERLY (Tom Bosco) -- Two men may have answers the State Fire Marshall is seeking in regards to the Emmitt House.
Investigators said two off-duty firefighters from Pennsylvania were at the bar Monday night when the owner asked them to check out a strange smell.
When they did, they ordered everyone out of the building. Moments later, the Emmitt House went up in flames.
By Friday, the community was still picking up the pieces, literally.
The restaurant owner Pam Ison was apparently passing out bricks to about 25 or 30 people who wanted souvenirs of the destroyed historic building.
"I think they just wanted a piece of history," community member Vicki Ward said. "The Emmitt House was really precious to everybody in this county. It was such a loss."
By Friday, investigators had still not determined a cause for the fire.
They said it was burning in the walls for about a half hour before it was addressed. They hope to track down those off-duty firefighters to see if they can shed any light on what they saw and smelled.
