Churches Fight Back Against Burglars

CHILLICOTHE (Lu Ann Stoia/Kate Liebers) -- Some Ross County churches, in reaction to recent thefts, have installed surveillance cameras around the perimeters.

Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ is one such church. Pastor Mark Clendaniel said his congregation and others in the county are banding together and trying to understand the thefts.

"They are seeking, searching," Clendaniel said. "We, as churches, come to them and say, 'You don't have to steal from us.'"

Church members said they are saddened by the burglaries, especially because they have happened at a time that is meant to be joyous.

"I don't know what they hope to gain by it," said member Beverly Seymour. "I am certain they will not prosper in God's eyes."

Some theorized that the economy may have triggered the crimes.

"When people are desperate, they do desperate things," said member BJ Tillett. "As our economy gets worse, I believe we will see more and more things that will shock us."

People have been calling police when suspicious people are spotted around churches.

Investigators said they are making some progress in the case. They have reportedly identified persons of interest, but have made no arrests.
