Police: Burglars Use Garage Door Openers to Break Into Multiple Homes
GROVE CITY (Lisa Rantala/Kate Liebers) -- Several police departments are trying to find a group of burglars suspected of using residents' own garage door openers to break into homes.
Detectives said about 20 incidences of similar break-ins have been reported in Sunbury, Columbus, New Albany and Grove City.
The suspects' method appears to be the same: They break into cars parked outside a home to steal the garage door opener, and then let themselves into the house.
Grove City resident Manal Jallaq said her family was robbed as they slept. She said they awoke to find the phone lines had been cut, curtains had been moved, and drawers -- including ones in their three-year-old twins' room -- had been opened.
Officers have heard similar stories 20 times before in Sunbury, Columbus, New Albany and Grove City. Every time, burglars opened the home's garage door themselves.
Jallaq said she thinks her daughter saw one burglar at their front door two weeks earlier.
"I really believe that they're watching people," she said. "How they did this was planned."
No arrests have been made.
Officers advised residents to not keep the garage door openers in their cars.
