Father of Boy Killed in Fall from Van Appears in Union County Court

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- A Union County judge has set a half-million dollar bail amount for a man charged in connection with the death of his young son, who fell from a minivan on Thursday.

Natividad De Jesus Hernandez appeared in court on Friday to face a charge of leaving the scene of an accident. Hernandez was allegedly behind the wheel of a 1997 Chevrolet Venture when his 4-year-old son, Angel, fell from the vehicle, which then struck the child.

Angel was pronounced dead at Dublin Methodist Hospital. He was not secured with a child-safety restraint when the incident occurred, according to investigators.

Other passengers who were inside the vehicle when the boy fell were not hurt.

Natividad, 30, stayed with his son until medics arrived at the accident scene, and then allegedly drove away in the Venture. He was soon located by deputies, who took him into custody.

Authorities believe Natividad -- who allegedly gave three fake names to investigators -- poses a flight risk. The suspect must provide $500,000 in cash to court officials in order to post bond. He will not be given the option of paying a percentage to a bondsman.
