COLUMBUS (Brooks Jarosz) -- ABC 6 is on your side with what you need to know when you return that unwanted Christmas gift.

Retailers say the best advice is to have your receipt, I.D. and credit card ready with your return before you hit the stores.

You typically have 60 to 90 days to take that unwanted gift back. Be sure and check your receipt for the return policy.

If the item is more than $75 and you dont have a receipt, many stores will only offer an in-store credit.

If you buy online, you can return items to the stores as long as you have the shipping label and an I.D.

Theres always something that has to be returned, shopper Chris Polton said. The wrong size or a duplicate, its just part of the holidays.
We found return lines were relatively short today. Retailers say if you ordered something online, you can return it to the store as long as you have the shipping slip. If not, youll usually need an I.D. to get a refund or will be issued an in-store credit.

ABC 6 Investigators found the days following Christmas is the best time to shop for discounted seasonal items. Many products have been advertised as 50- to 75-percent off the original price.
