COLUMBUS -- One of the most popular New Year's resolutions can also be one of the toughest -- getting in shape.

The following are ABC 6 tips to make sure your workout works for you:

1. Make a plan and set your goals.
Check with your new gym about complimentary assessments or personal training sessions.

2. Know that just focusing on cardio could slow your results.
Trainers recommend mixing cardio with resistance training, such as lifting weights.

3. Limit rest time between sets to 30 seconds, depending on the exercise.

4. Keep workouts creative.
Your body can get used to certain motions, so mix up a workout with different machines or exercises.

5. Watch what you drink after a workout.
Trainers warn against sugary sports drinks and sugary protein shakes. 

Trainers say that while changing your body may not be easy, it can be done with some dedication and hard work.
