Westerville South Student Dies After Basketball Practice Collapse

WESTERVILLE (Ken Hines/Kate Liebers) -- Members of a central Ohio community are mourning the shocking loss of a high school student who died Wednesday after collapsing during basketball practice.

Westerville South High School junior Christopher Randolph died at St. Ann's Hospital just after 7 p.m., according to a Westerville City Schools press release.

The person who called 911 told dispatchers the student athlete was "having trouble breathing."

"We thought it was just dehydration," said Matt Hoffman, a friend of Christopher's. "He just kind of lay down. We thought he was tired or something."

Randolph was treated at the school by an athletic trainer following his collapse, before being transported to St. Ann's.

The cause of Randolph's collapse has not been publicly disclosed. The autopsy results are expected to be released Friday.

Westerville South Principal Steve Anderson announced the 17-year-old's death to students on Thursday morning. Grief counselors are assisting students and community members at the school; they will remain on campus throughout the day.
