West Columbus Family Escapes Burning Home

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- A family safely escaped a burning home Thursday morning on the city's West Side, along with a Christmas present one of the children received the previous day.

Two adults and four children exited their home at 268 W. Park Ave. after an apparent electrical issue caused flames to break out one of the second-floor bedrooms.

The children's father told ABC 6/FOX 28, despite the damage to his home and belongings, the safety of his family has enabled him to keep the day's events in perspective.

"It is stressful, but I'm just glad all the kids are fine," said Michael, who did not provide his last name. "Everything else in there is material. I can replace that eventually -- if not tomorrow, then next month, next year -- but the main thing is that my kids are fine."

A young boy who lives in the home was able to grab the toy helicopter he received for Christmas as he made his way to safety. The family's dog also escaped the house unharmed.
