Apartment Groundskeeper Shot During Robbery Talks About Ordeal

COLUMBUS (Tara Morgan) -- An apartment complex groundskeeper shot during a robbery says he was trying to help some friends in need.

Patrick Gaines spoke to ABC6/FOX28 from his hospital bed at Grant Medical Center Monday night.

Hours earlier, he called his friends over to the Brookside Manor apartments on Refugee Road to get a stove he had for them when a robber came into the picture.

Gaines says the gunman told them to put their hands on a car so he could frisk them for their wallets, but Gaines chose to run away.

"I was looking like I was going to run he said don't run so when he started searching the guys I took off and he turned around and shot me," said Gaines.

Gaines was struck in the buttocks. The bullet came out through his right leg.

He says he's lost feeling in his right foot and may need surgery.

The gunman was seen getting away in a gold Jeep Cherokee.
