UPDATE: Fire Destroys Another Morrow County Church

MORROW COUNTY (Tom Bosco/Ken Hines) -- For the second time in less than a month, a church in Morrow County was destroyed by fire.

The flames were first reported at approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gethsemane Baptist Church on Watson Road in the Marengo area. Four departments responded to the scene.

Fire fighters found black smoke emanating from the church's basement. Crews contained the fire by early afternoon, and decided to let the remaining flames burn out naturally.

Pastor Donnie Hale heard about the fire from a friend and could see the smoke as he arrived.

As church leaders surveyed the damage, they were left to ponder the message on their sign: "This is the will of God."

Hale was asked what to make of the fire in this context.

"Tough question, tough question. I don't have a great answer for that, but he does have a purpose for it," Hale said. "I am confident of that."

The blaze forced the closure of one lane of State Route 61 to accommodate the movement of fire trucks.

No injuries have been linked to the fire.

Less than two weeks ago, the only Catholic church in Morrow County burned down.

Fire fighters said there was not much to save by the time they arrived at the Sacred Hearts church in Cardington.

The cause was undetermined due to the extent of the damage.
