Police Identify Officers, Teenage Suspect in NE Columbus Shooting

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines/Kate Liebers) -- Police have released the names of two officers involved in a shooting, as well as the teenage suspect critically wounded during the altercation.

Officers Mathew Jenkins and Thomas Pierson fired at 17-year-old Dabron White during a Saturday night pursuit that began in Gahanna and ended in Northeast Columbus.

White was struck by an undisclosed number of bullets, and is listed in critical but stable condition at Grant Medical Center.

Columbus Police Department did not immediately find a weapon, but eventually recovered a gun from the teenager. Two days after the incident, police had not reported if the teen had fired his gun at police.

Jenkins and Pierson began chasing the teen while investigating a report of an armed male at a woman's Stirlingshire Court home.

A woman had called 911 saying the teen tried to intimidate her daughter out of her house.

"I have a restraining order on that Dabron, a boy that used to date my daughter," the caller told dispatchers.

The woman had pressed charges on White in September after he allegedly punched her daughter in the face and threw her phone on the ground. The protection order had since been dismissed.

When dispatchers asked if the suspect had a gun, she said he was "waving something" and "said he's looking for some earrings or something."

While traveling to the caller's home, the officers stopped a suspicious vehicle driven by one of White's adult family members at McCutcheon Avenue and Stelzer Road.

White -- who had been hiding in the vehicle -- eventually moved into the driver's seat, and forced his relative out of the car, according to police. He then drove away from police, who eventually trapped the vehicle in a parking lot.

White attempted to flee Jenkins and Pierson on foot after exiting the car, but was soon caught by the officers, who were forced to fire their weapons because of unspecified actions taken by the teen, according to a Columbus Division of Police media release.

White is charged with assault and criminal damaging associated with the alleged altercation involving at the Stirlingshire Court home that preceded the suspect's attempted flight from police. He has not been charged in connection with the shooting.

Investigators have not determined if White pushed his relative out of the car, or if she chose to exit the vehicle. That relative was not hurt during the incident, and has allegedly refused to cooperate with investigators.
