ABC INVESTIGATES: Crooked Contractors

MARION COUNTY (Tom Sussi) -- Former customers say he's a real sweet-talker, but cops say he's nothing but a thief.

Marion contractor Frank Malone, owner of Frank's Roofing and Construction, has a reputation for charging customers for work left unfinished.

In Marion County alone, he owes nearly $100,000 in outstanding court judgments.

Single mother Christin Carnell said she was living paycheck to paycheck when Malone ripped her off.

She said she hired Malone's company last November to replace some siding that suffered hail and wind damage months earlier. Carnell said she paid $6,700 up front, but never saw Malone after he ripped off the old siding.

She said she was forced to borrow $7,000 and hire another company to finish the job.

More recently, Marion County court records show that a family paid Malone $3,000 to put a new roof on their home -- a job police said was never started.

Malone is scheduled to go to court Jan. 15 in connection to theft charges. If convicted, he faces up to six months in jail.

If you have been cheated by Malone, call the Marion County Prosecutors Office at 740-223-4290.
