Oxygen Tank Explodes in Burning West Columbus Home

COLUMBUS (Jen French/Ken Hines) -- An elderly couple managed to escape serious injury when a fire caused an oxygen tank to explode inside their West Side home on Friday morning.

Larry Byus helped his wife out of the couple's Fisher Road home at approximately 10 a.m., and then re-entered the burning house to retrieve her oxygen tanks, one of which exploded because of the heat.

Byus was knocked back by the blast, but was not seriously hurt. His wife will require minor medical attention, according to family members.

Fire fighters quickly extinguished the flames after their arrival. Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire.
