Wrong-Way Driver in Critical Condition After I-71 Crash

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- Police think a motorist may have been under the influence of alcohol when he crashed into two vehicles while driving the wrong way on a central Ohio highway early Friday morning.

The driver slammed into a semi truck on I-71 Northbound near North Broadway at approximately 1 a.m., then sideswiped another vehicle, according to police.

Investigators believe the wrong-way driver was drunk while behind the wheel, and may have been driving in the wrong direction for 10 miles before he crashed. He was transported to an undisclosed hospital in critical condition.

The drivers of the other vehicles involved in the crash were not hurt.

I-71 was closed in the area of the crash for approximately five hours while crews removed the damaged vehicles and cleaned debris from the highway.

Police have not released the name of the injured driver.
