Man Charged After Police Chase-Crash

COLUMBUS (James Jackson/Kate Liebers) -- A suspected drunk driver was charged after reportedly leading deputies on a chase on Interstate 71 and crashing near Stringtown Road.

Bryan Barksdale, 21, was charged with miscellaneous traffic offenses related to the incident. Sheriff deputy dashboard cameras show the suspect weaving through southbound traffic while officers gave chase around 9 a.m. Monday.

He was reportedly going 75 miles an hour before taking out part of a speed limit sign, driving into the grass and coming to a stop on the side of the interstate.

The chase began after deputies said they noticed something suspicious about the car.

"The bumper was halfway off of the car and he was still traveling at a high rate of speed, at which the officer tried to engage him to pull over," Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott said. "He was refusing to pull over."

Scott said drugs or alcohol may have been a factor.

"With those types of indicators, the officer's going to pull this individual over (and) find out what's going on before someone else does get hurt," he said.

Barksdale was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash, police said.

This crash may not have been the suspects first.

Deputies said Barksdale might also be tied to four hit-skip crashes in the area.
