WASTE WATCH: Ohio Failed to Return Taxpayers' Money

COLUMBUS (Brooks Jarosz) -- The Ohio Inspector General says the state Department of Taxation failed to return tens of millions of dollars in business taxpayers money.

The state watchdog released an investigation Thursday that found $34 million in requested refunds were wrongfully withheld to companies that properly requested the money.

This comes after an earlier investigation into an employee theft case. Since then, a separate investigation found these millions of dollars were placed on pending status and never paid out. The report says this issue dates back to 1999.

During the investigation, the Ohio Department of Taxation began returning some of the money to taxpayers.

The Inspector General says the practice of the Department of Taxation was not to inform taxpayers of any overpayment.

Once the investigation began, the agency said it would alert businesses when it overpaid taxes and would work to help those businesses reclaim the money.
