SHOOTING SPREE: Walmart Customers Witness Chaos

COLUMBUS (Jen French/Kate Liebers) -- Walmart customers became witnesses to an officer-involved shooting Friday morning.

The parking lot in front of 3900 Morse Road in Northeast Columbus became a police scene, as SWAT officers fired shots at the suspect of a shooting spree.

The suspect, 47-year-old Daniel Thornton, died on the scene.

Shoppers who were still in the store were asked to stay inside. Some were caught in the crossfire, but no customers were shot.

"As soon as she opened up her groceries, she said the officer's car came up right behind her truck," said Aaron Seymore, whose sister saw the gunfight unfold.
"It was probably at least 10 or 15 feet from her truck and she literally had to dive on the cold ground in the spray of bullets."

Although customers were free to exit the store after Thornton was shot, police forbid drivers to take their cars out of the lot for nearly four hours while they investigated the scene.
