Cabela's to Expand Parking Lot
COLUMBUS (Tom Bosco/Kate Liebers) -- In time to accommodate holiday shoppers, the Cabela's has added a new parking lot to its Polaris location.
"In the past eight months we've been in business, we've had nearly a million visitors to the store," said Derrek Shively, Cabela's spokesperson.
The hunting and outdoor gear retailer proved to be popular the minute it opened. Visitors clogged the Interstate 71 exit ramps and Ohio Department of Transportation had to put up message boards warning drivers of the congestion.
The lot has the potential to get so packed, customer John Daniels refuses to shop there on the weekends.
"I want to avoid the crowds and I have the opportunity to show during the week," he said. "So that's why I shop during the week."
In response to customer demand, the store now has a new lot with 100 more spaces -- a 25-percent increase since it opened.
The lot will be ready for customers by Black Friday, when the store will open at 5 a.m.
Shively said the store is taking steps to prevent traffic problems during this busy event.
"We do have some plans in place already to be working with the Columbus Police Department for special duty officers to help traffic control in and out of the parking lot."
ODOT does not have an estimate of how traffic had increased in the area.
Drivers speaking from experience, however, seem to agree that the increase is noticeable.
