Woman Escapes Burning Home with 7 Kids

KNOX COUNTY (Ken Hines/Kate Liebers) -- A mother escaped with seven children Wednesday morning as a fire destroyed the family's home.

Strong winds and limited access to water left fire fighters unable to save Ruth Miller's Divan Road home, which caught fire at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Miller was alerted to the fire when she noticed smoke coming from the heat ducts. That smoke quickly filled the home, according to investigators.

Seven of Miller's 12 children were sleeping upstairs when the fire started. As smoke filled the house, Miller got them outside.

That was my most important thing and, you know, this is hard, but I feel very blessed, Miller said. Were all alive.

Miller said she considered going back into the house to get her purse and phone before realizing that would be too risky.

It was so smoky, I couldnt see, she said. I was coughing.

She and her children instead stayed outside, where neighbors showed up to help out.

A state fire marshals investigator was on scene even as firefighters struggled with the fire. Investigators considered the house to be a total loss.
