Woman Worried About Accidents on Busy Columbus Road

NORTH COLUMBUS (Jen French) -- A woman is concerned that drivers are merging into trouble on a busy North Columbus road.

Kelly Pyles says she is one of many drivers who have gotten into a fender bender on South Old State Road between Delaware and Franklin Counties. Plans are in place to fix the street, but Pyles thinks construction should happen sooner. She believes there's too much congestion on the road during rush hour to safely pull out of businesses.

"I was looking for southbound traffic--and a little bit of my bumper must have been sticking into that turn lane, Pyles said.

Columbus Police issued Pyles a traffic citation. The Delaware County Engineer said he could not comment on Pyles accident, but says both Franklin and Delaware county engineers have been aware of the troublesome traffic for a few years.

ABC 6/ FOX 28 pulled a traffic case study and found between 2007 and 2009, 226 crashes were reported on a 2-mile stretch of Old State Road, double the state average.

Construction isn't expected to start until 2016, when MORPC funds are available. Some ideas include adding curbs or reconfiguring lanes.

"It's not soon enough. It's been going on way too long. Too many accidents, Pyles said.
