'E-Joints' May Have Caused Victorian Village Explosion
COLUMBUS (Maria Durant/Kate Liebers) -- Police said they know what caused the explosion at an apartment on Dennison Avenue: The two men inside were trying to make e-joints.
"It's a new phenomenon," Columbus Police Narcotics Commander Gary Cameron said.
Cameron said officers found marijuana, e-cigarettes and butane inside the apartment.
He said the men supposedly used the butane to extract the THC, the narcotic component, from the marijuana plant. The THC could then be put inside the e-cigarette cartridges as a discrete way to get high.
"What was meant to help (tobacco) smokers is now being used to exploit greed to further sell drugs to our children," Cameron said.
"I've talked to parents and teachers and they say they see kids using these e-cigarettes."
Officers said they are worried about the new e-joints. They said you can't smell the drug when used in the e-cigarette cartridges.
The two men who were inside the apartment have not yet been charged.
Police said one is still in the hospital with second and third degree burns.
Charges are pending.
