Couple Married One Month after Groom's Much Needed Lung Transplant
ZANESVILLE (Tara Morgan) -- A couple ties the knot in a hospital one month after the groom's life-saving lung transplant.
Doug and Susan Smith had been planning a wedding but had to cancel just days before the big day this summer.
The 42 year old Doug Smith, a former Muskingum County sheriff's deputy, was diagnosed in 2011 with pulmonary fibrosis.
As his condition worsened, his doctors told him he needed a double lung transplant.
"I was kind of taking my last breath toward the end," said Doug Smith.
Days before their scheduled wedding in June, they got a call about a donor.
One month after their original wedding date, they tied the knot at the Cleveland Clinic.
The Smiths say they're forever grateful for the donor and their family.
"I would thank them for giving me a second chance at life their family member to give me a second chance at life," said Doug Smith.
The Smiths are holding a benefit with silent auctions Saturday, October 26th, at the Muskingum Fairgrounds from 11 to 7 to help pay for medical expenses.
