Largest Child Porn Sting in Central Ohio Leads to 40 Arrests
COLUMBUS (Maria Durant/Kate Liebers) A three-month police investigation into crimes involving children led to 44 arrests, the Franklin County Sheriffs Office reported.
Authorities said 40 people were arrested for possessing and distributing child pornography, and four were arrested for attempting to meet a child.
Sheriff Zach Scott said the Operation Red Box investigation, conducted by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, was the largest of its kind in central Ohio.
Officers with the task force say they have seen an increase of Internet crimes involving children.
Task Force Director Brett Kyker attributed the increase to greater access for predators.
Predators arent just reaching out to the kids through their computers, Kyker said. They can reach their targets through video games and different technical avenues.
Scott said officers conducted search warrants, undercover operations and patrolled chat rooms before making the arrests.
Scott advised parents to also do their part in preventing these crimes. The first step, he said, is recognizing that your child could be a victim.
You child can be pursued by these individuals, dont think it cant happen to you and your family.
The task force is made up of 16 law enforcement officers from around Franklin County.
